Types of cars based on body style or shape demystified

Remember the previous post where we highlighted that stylish men love luxurious cars? Yes, we do, whatever the cars’ brand may be, we go for their luxuries models. And like I also mentioned, we will be using this platform to help some men improve their sense of style. Being dapper is not limited to a neat appearance, it is rather a complete package attributed to a style-conscious gentleman. Often than not I hear people use the wrong appellation to describe cars and being a pedant, I sometimes jump into the conversation uninvited to correct them – sounds weird but I guess I am not a sole proprietor of such mannerisms. To start identifying cars based on body style irrespective of brand, I will start with small ones and move up to the garage monsters. I will be biased with mostly using luxurious cars as examples because they fit the contest of a dapper maniac.

  1. Roadster. A roadster is a convertible, but a convertible is not necessarily a roadster. Roadster defines a vehicle that has an open top, two doors, two seats, and is made for sport. Common examples are Lamborghini Aventador, Tesler Roadster, BMW i8 Roadster, Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster etc. It is not meant for racing, but it is enough to keep the average driver on the edge of his or her seat. If this description does not satisfy your expertise on automobiles adeptness, let me hear from you! There is a comment section below that inviting.

  1. Coupe. Traditionally this term refers to cars that have a sleek, sloping roofline, two doors, and two functional seats up front (plus two tiny seats in the back) for example Audi S5, Ford Mustang, BMW 650, Mercedes Benz CL class. Some have these back seats, and some do not (the selfish couples type). Common examples are Ford Porsche Carrera, Corvette, Audi R8, Maserati Grand Tourismo, BMW M2. More recently, auto manufacturers started to apply the coupe definition to the sporty variants of their sedan lineup (BMW 4 and 6 Grande coupe series). As a result, the coupe term has become more popular with manufacturers, who apply it more loosely.

  1. Convertible or Cabriolet. As you may have expected, cabriolet is a foreign word for convertible. It defines a vehicle that has a hard- or soft-top retractable roof. The weird part is the word itself – Cabriolet, obviously a French word, so why does it pop up in the German auto industry (Audi most especially)? As it turns out, the Germans stole this word and use it to describe a vehicle with a convertible roof. Nowadays convertibles come in a variety of body styles from coupes to crossovers like Range Rover Evoque.

  1. Hatchback. The hatchback is basically a car body configuration that features a rear door. The rear door takes the place of the trunk/boot found in sedans and swings upwards when opened to access the cargo area. Usually, in these types of cars the second-row seats can be folded down to further increase cargo storage space. Hatchbacks are also described as three-door or five-door cars since the up-swinging rear door is also considered in the count. Popular cars in this category are Volkswagen Golf, MINI Cooper, FIAT 500 etc. Not to be confused with station wagons which feature similar designs but simultaneously prioritize cargo space and passenger seating capacity.

  1. Sedan. Let’s start with the basic car most people love to own; a standard sedan. Also known as Saloon in some countries, this car is mainly a passenger vehicle featuring 2 rows of seats. The rear compartment seating is adequate for adult passengers and the cargo area is in the rear but sectioned off from the seating area. The cargo space is commonly known as the trunk or boot of the car. Out of all other car types, this offers the least storage capacity, which is expected as a sedan prioritizes passenger’s seating over cargo area. Most sedans have three passenger seats at the back except for some luxurious models which only have two distinct seats on both ends separated by an interior rear center console for example the Porsche Panamera, Hyundai Equus. It is worthy of note that sedans also come is three sizes from small (Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS, Mercedes Benz C class), midsize (Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Lexus GS/ES, Jaguar XF, Mercedes Benz E class) and full size (Audi A8, BMW 7 series, Jarguar XJ, Lexus LS, Mercedes Benz S class)

  1. Wagon. Wagon is also known as “Station wagon”. This is a variant of sedan style cars and very similar to hatchbacks. The main difference is of an extra gate available on the rare side. This gate can be either liftgate or tailgate. The roof is extended a little towards back which is shared by passengers or cargo or both. Wagons are mainly two box cars with three or mainly four pillars. Now you might be thinking that how does they differ from hatchbacks? The roof of the wagon styles of cars extend itself till the rare end of the car with its full height and have big windows on cargo side, whereas hatchbacks have curved roofs at rare end with very small windows or without windows on cargo side. You may look at Volkswagen Passat and compare this wagon with the hatchback above to understand it clearly. Besides Passat, other highly rated wagons you might be looking at for your shopaholic stylish wife are Volvo V60 Polestar, Audi Allroad, BMW 3 Sseries Sports Wagon, Mercedes-Benz E class wagon, Cadillac CTS-V wagon etc

  1. Crossover. Also referred as CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) it is built on a car platform, which merges features of an SUV and Hatchback, hence the name crossover. It usually has a high center of gravity, high ground clearance, independent rear wheel suspension and superior fuel economy like sedans. Crossovers are available in Front-wheel drives, Rear-Wheel Drives and All-Wheel Drives depending on the manufacturer; as they are not designed for any off-road capability like the SUV. Some cool picks to consider from this category are Porsche Cayenne, Macan, Lexus RX, Maserati Levante, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar F-type, etc

  1. SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). Sport Utility vehicles are large types of cars, which are fitted on small truck like chassis. SUVs are especially designed for off-road drives, commonly fitted with four doors. These cars have high ground clearance, comparatively big tires, extreme power with high load carrying ability and good room for sitting. Some SUVs come with four-wheel drive, whereas some with only two wheels drive. SUVs have many variants and types depending on the various uses. Few SUVs are fitted with luxurious interior which makes them very attractive and highly comfortable. This the ideal family vehicle with come loaded with rear passenger entertainment pack such as TV screens suitable for kids especially for road trips. If you love road trips like I do then you want to consider one of these; Cadillac Escalade ESV, Lexus LX 570, Mercedes-Benz G class, Toyota 4Runner etc

  1. Minivan.  a small van, typically one fitted with seats in the back for passengers which is designed primarily for passenger safety and comfort. It’s usually set up for family use, with room for five or more passengers. It drives like a car. I am not a big fan of minivans as I would prefer an SUV for family vehicle over a minivan but some common minivans on the streets are; Dodge Caravan, Nissan Quest, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona.

  1. Van. A box shaped vehicle used for transporting goods or people. It has body on frame construction, and usually doesn’t have comfortable passenger accommodations, and drives like a truck. I am only trying to make a clarity here as I have seen people call a van, truck, if you are fond of such please avoid me right up into our next world 😊

Truck. This is a vehicle which the owner can use like a van, but it is normally open at the back. You will have the option to close the back with a canopy. It is a very versatile vehicle to move cargo and people (if u buy the double cab version). Common truck examples are Toyota Tundra, Takoma, Nissan Titan, Ford F series, Subaru Baja etc,

If your vehicle doesn’t look anything like the images above, even if you use it to carry 200lbs worth of firewood please do not call it a truck, there’s no Mercedes ML truck or Minivan truck, if you disagree, well the comment section is here waiting for you to enter your name and tell us why
